WHAT IS “SPOKEN WORD”? SOUNDS KIND OF DRY AND DUSTY…
While everybody knows and enjoys Stand-up comedy, ‘Spoken Word’ performance can seem rather daunting, or confusing for many.
There’s no reason for this confusion, as it’s really very simple!
‘Spoken Word’ is the overall term for any un-scripted verbal performance.
This can involve comedy, poetry, or music, but ultimately it’s simply the art of inspiring, amusing or entertaining through spoken performance.
The misconception that we will subject you to a dry and dreary poetry recital is simply incorrect!
As Spoken Word is such a diverse category, we have provided as much information as we can to introduce each performer and their style in the catalogue and online.
We invite you to enter into the Fireside festival with an open mind. Have a browse of the acts, and maybe come along and see an act you haven’t heard of before; we promise you won’t be disappointed!
A STORYTELLING FESTIVAL? SO IT’S JUST FOR KIDS?
The answer is a definite ‘NO!’
Fireside features several early afternoon performances specially for the under 8’s, however the majority of our shows are evening events, with talented storytellers aimed at adults who will enthrall you with their stories and humour.
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS STORYTELLING?
If the word ‘Storytelling’ to you conjures up images of kids around the campfire, think again! An increasingly popular form of entertainment, storytelling is much more than fairytales, fiction and ghost stories.
It’s the most ancient form humans have of explaining and exploring the world around us, of sharing ideas, or simply entertaining and enthralling.
“There have been great
societies that did not use the
wheel, but there have been
no societies that did not
tell stories” – Ursula K. LeGuin
Our storytellers will take you on a journey with their captivating tales. Prepare to be on the edge of your seat, rolling in the aisles, or simply wowed by their skills of narrative structure and language. Above all, it’s always a fun and friendly experience.
